Pilot-Monitoring on Pesticides in Honey (EURL-AO and EURL-SRM)
In a collaborative pilot-monitoring project of the EURL-AO and the EURL-SRM a total of 187 honey samples from more than 30 countries of origin were analyzed for a very large scope of MRM and SRM pesticides and metabolites. The sampling has taken place in between 2022 and 2024 and honey from local stores as well as bulk material for business-to-business trade. The share of organic honeys was ~6%, which is close to the share of organic honeys in the EU market.
In total more than 1000 analytes wer targeted with both EURLs covering the full scope of their respective routine laboratories (CVUAS and CVUAFR). The targeted analytes included some compounds omnipresent in the environment which legally partly regarded as pesticides and partly as contaminants, such as copper, chlorate, phosphonic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, cyanuric acid, melamine and perchlorate. Certain antibiotics were also tested but in a reduced number of samples with some positive findings being recorded.
This study aimed at covering a very broad scope of pesticides by using state-of-the-art instrumentation, in order to provide a good overview of the residue situation of pesticides and metabolites in honey on the European market. It should also give guidance to laboratories when it comes to chosing the compounds to be targeted in honey.
